The Bible tells us that as Christians, we are the salt of the Earth and the light of the World.
Salt and light are vital necessities of a person’s life. But there is something we must take note of. Like the salt used in our daily cooking, as much as it is needful and makes our foods nice, too much of it will spoil the whole dish, as well as too little of it is just annoying.
Now, as the salt of the earth, my dear Christian, how do we know if we are being “too much” or are just “too little”? I will tell you.
As salt, you become too much when you begin to impose your faith, beliefs, way of life, and deeds on others, as well as when you decide to do your “righteousness” in public so that you will be seen by people. [Matthew 6:1_ “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have NO REWARD from your Father in heaven.”]
Too much salt in the soup (Earth) is when your Christian faith becomes a form of dictatorship instead of a show of genuine love. I know that being Christian and experiencing God is very liberating, loving, and sweet, as such you are too anxious to share this experience of your faith with your neighbor, family or children so that they can also have a taste of it.
Having this desire is good, but there is a way you can go about it without being too controlling; IMPOSING your willothers. Remember, God doesn’t (impose) control; He loves!
As Christians (the salt of the Earth), we make impact through the way of love. Thus, as the salt of the Earth, we put into people/things a little of our (good) self at a time, and then taste it to see its effects (“Are they liking it?” “Do they want more?” “Is love leading or am I being controlling?”) If we have seen the effect of our acts of love, and we need to add more, we do. We keep adding more till we have made the impact; we have made the soup (Earth, neighborhood, workplace, family, etc) tasty, not salty.
[1 Peter 3:1-2 _ “Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that if any of them do not believe the word, they may be WON OVER without words BY THE BEHAVIOUR OF THEIR WIVES when THEY SEE the PURITY and REVERENCE of your lives.”]
My dear, you are a living epistle being read by the world. Let your good deeds do the talking/ “evangelism”. This leads me to the second part of the scripture; “you are the light of the world.”
There is nothing like “too much” light really. Light shines so bright till darkness loses its power/place. While you don’t impose your faith on people, let your light [good deeds] shine (so bright) before men, so that THEY MAY SEE your GOOD WORKS, and GLORIFY your Father in Heaven.
As important as salt is, it’s taken in small quantities (at a time) till it has made its impact. But light (your good deeds) needs to shine bright. Shine so bright that darkness (over people, in places, in your environment/company) will lose its hold.
You are Salt and Light. Don’t be only a salt, and disregard your light factor, neither should you be so much on your light factor neglecting that you are salt too. Pour your salt into others (in small quantities at time per the need), and let your light (your good deeds) shine bright (be plenty).
If you speak even in the tongues of angels (as a salt) but have no love (as light), you are only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal (a useless thing) [1 Corinthians 13:1 NIV]. TAKE NOTE!
Stay Blessed.
I love you… and God Loves you More.
Remember, you are the Salt of the Earth, AND the Light of the World.
“Let us NOT become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we DO NOT GIVE UP.” _ [Galatians 6:9 NIV]
Amen.
