Why is knowledge so abundant but yet, ignorance seem to have the key of our society?
Why do we have a lot of graduated doctors, lawyers, and even pastors, but yet, we see little impact on society from these people?
The answer is simple: It is because, most of us don’t meditate. We like to know (acquire knowledge), but we lack the know-how (wisdom /understanding).
There are lots of Christians in the world, but if I should tell someone to walk on water as Christ did on earth or raise the dead, there will be fear and panic everywhere. Why? BECAUSE THAT PERSON HAS NO UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE.
The Bible says that Christ had the HolySpirit in Him, and he went about doing good, healing the sick, casting out demons, doing miracles and a whole lot, but should I ask a Christian, in fact, a Spirit-filled, Tongues speaking holy Christian to do any of the miracles Jesus did on earth, say, feeding the 5000 men, people will think I am crazy for making such a request. But what did scripture say? [JOHN 14:12] “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, anyone who believes in Me [as Savior] will also do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these [in extent and outreach], because I am going to the Father.
Who said this? Jesus Christ. Was he stupid or is he stupid for saying this? Absolutely not. He said, “Heaven and earth [as now known] will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”[Matthew 24:35]
Lots of us Christians, with me included lack the understanding of Scriptures. We know them, we have learnt them, we have been taught them since childhood or middle school but there is nothing to show of it except our salvation. No! That is malnourishment.
I am 26 years old, and I don’t think people expect me to still be feeding from my mother’s breasts. Why? Because, at my age (26), I am expected to have grown from that, breast milk.
If even in the natural, feeding on breast milk at my age is abnormal, don’t you think that at our ages too, we should not still be feeding on the milk of the Word? Most of us are still babies in Christ even at our age, with all the grey hairs and all. We are still feeding on the sincere milk of the word of God as little infants instead of breaking bones as adults or matured persons in Christ.
Meditation gives Understanding!
You are bound to get little of your acquired knowledge if you don’t meditate. Meditation brings illumination and understanding, making it easier to live in a particular sector of life.
Most of us have read John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son…” blah blah blah, but should I ask anyone of us, “Who has gotten a revelation of this word deeper than its text?” None of us will own up or a few of us will say yes. Why? Because we think we know so we settle, forgetting that, we just settled for ‘less’.
If Joseph had settled for Potiphar’s house, he wouldn’t have gotten to Pharaoh’s kingdom or palace. Let me leave that for another time.
Meditation give illumination. [Matthew 6:22-23 _ “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!]
If you don’t meditate, you lack a lot of the nutrients of a particular knowledge!
Knowledge is good. “For the lack of knowledge, my people perish. [Hosea 4:6, Job 36:12, Proverbs 5:23]” Gaining knowledge of a thing is the first and beginning step, but not meditating upon the knowledge acquired is like eating and still growing lean. Why? Because, the knowledge didn’t become a part of you.
Meditation makes the knowledge acquired your lifestyle, and its application is Wisdom.
The bridge between knowledge and wisdom is understanding through Meditation.
If you gain knowledge but do not meditate on that knowledge for it to become a part of you, you are bound to forget it and fall back into ignorance. Note: Gaining knowledge is good, but without you meditating upon it is worse (that is, it is a waste of time and energy and you would have deceived us into thinking that you had the knowledge).
How can we meditate on a subject?
You can meditate on a subject by asking questions around/about the subject: The Why, and the How, and the why should I? Yes!
For instance, you have been told or have read that washing of hands is good.
The knowledge acquired here is, “Hand washing is good.” This is vague until you meditate upon the subject.
For instance, ask yourself, “Why should I wash my hands?” “What is really hand washing?” “If I don’t wash my hands what will happen?” “Is hand washing really good or does it have a hidden disadvantage?” “How can someone benefit from hand washing too?”
Answers to these questions bring illumination of the subject to you. You begin to take in the knowledge and really accept it, then, gradually, as you keep answering the questions, the knowledge becomes a part of you, and you can now apply the knowledge in wisdom and hence be called a wise man.
In the book of Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compared two builders. He called one wise and the other, foolish. What was the difference between these two builders? Who can tell me?
The difference between them was, one applied the knowledge gotten or given, while the other didn’t put into practice what he has learnt or heard. But I want to ask you, how could the foolish builder had applied his acquired knowledge if he didn’t even understand a thing?
It applies to us. If we don’t gain understanding of a subject, it doesn’t become real but abstract to us and we tend to either forget it with time or not apply it at all. How can we apply something we don’t understand?
If you will choose not to meditate on a subject, not the Holy Scriptures. Because, the letters of God are deeper than the texts we see in the Bible. Ask yourself this, “If the Bible was really written over 2000 years ago, how come whenever it is preached it always seem new and fresh?” It is because, the Word of God, unlike earthly food never expires. The more you take it in, the more strength, understanding, power, exhibition of authority you’ve got. But if you don’t read it or meditate upon it, ponder over it, you will lose big and that is why you will be 26 like me but be still suckling on the breasts of the HolySpirit.
Don’t say, “I don’t want more. I am okay and comfortable with sucking the ‘breasts’ of God through the HolySpirit.” No!
Like every parent, God desires for us to grow. He can’t really have a deeper communicating relationship with a ‘baby’. A mother can’t really have a deeper conversation with a toddler. It is not possible. And besides, if you stay young or as a baby, you will be vulnerable to the devil. He can easily attack and destroy you, because you are not strong to fight your fights.
“But God will fight for me.” You may say. No sweetheart. God doesn’t fight all the fights for his children. He has given his children authority through the name of Jesus. So you have to fight some battles of yours on your own with the strength, power and authority he has given you in the name of Jesus.
And know this, we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood but against rulers, against powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places[Ephesians 6:12]. You are too put on the armor of God guys.
The Word of God needs meditation for its assimilation and digestion!
Without the meditation of the Word of God, you will never grow to experience anything!
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [AND MEDITATE ON] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be successful.[JOSHUA 1:8]
[Psalms 1:1-3__ Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked [following their advice and example], Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit [down to rest] in the seat of scoffers (ridiculers). But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And on His law [His precepts and teachings] he [habitually] MEDITATES day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted [and fed] by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers [and comes to maturity].
Just as you can not chew a whole plate of food at once, when meditating on the Word of God, don’t rush to finish, don’t force a whole lot of knowledge to meditate upon at a particular time. Take it piece after piece as the HolySpirit leads you. If you cram everything all at once, you may cause some of it to slip by without being meditated upon.
And as I said, the word of God is deeper than what we see, read or think, so with just a scripture or a line of quote from God, it can take you hours to meditate and get the revelation from it. No problem! Meditate anyway.
ALSO NOTE THIS: YOU CANNOT MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD WITHOUT HIS SPIRIT. [1 Corinthians 2:10]
Ask the HolySpirit to reveal his word to you. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SPIRIT OF GOD. Just as you are/have a spirit, the HolySpirit is God’s Spirit. Do you get that?
So in other to understand God or anything about him in his word, you have to ask his Spirit which he has given to us to give you the illumination of his word and bring you to remembrance.[1 Corinthians 2:10-12, John 14:26]
Stay Blessed…The Grace and Peace of God be upon you.
Amen.
